Do you know where in the world you can find the most entertainment per square mile? It would be no surprise if you guessed New York City, with its famed Broadway and Times Square. But what about the actual capital of entertainment? Well, that would be Las Vegas, Nevada.

The city is home to nearly 40 hotels and casinos that attract tourists from around the world for their chance to indulge in some of the most entertaining experiences on Earth.

The city’s name may have something to do with gambling (although not necessarily gaming), but it also has a lot to do with being imaginative—a trait that is evident throughout every facet of Las Vegas.

      Where is Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is located in Clark County, Nevada, on the border with Utah. The city extends south into the Mojave Desert, west into the Arizona border, and east into the Lake Mead flood-control basin. In the centre of the city, on the south end of Las Vegas Boulevard, lies McCarran International Airport. Las Vegas is part of the greater Southern Nevada area, which includes the cities of Henderson and North Las Vegas. The metropolitan area is the largest economic centre in Southern Nevada, and the third largest in the United States, with a population of 2.3 million, as of 2015.

How Did Las Vegas Get Its Name?

There is a lot of speculation as to how the city got its name. Some believe it was named after Las Vega, a silver mining camp in Spain. Others believe the name came from the fact that the area was once the watering hole for a lot of the local mule trains. Still, others believe the city’s name came from the fact that it was the end of the line for the Overland Stage Company.

But no matter the reasoning behind the name, there is no denying that this place is full of entertainment. In the early 1900s, Las Vegas was a small town known mostly for its irrigation system and farming. However, by the 1930s, the area was becoming more popular for tourism than agriculture. In 1931, the first permanent casino opened in Las Vegas.

Other businesses soon followed suit and by 1941, the city was known for having some of the best hotels and casinos in the world. Eventually, gambling became more widespread throughout the city, and by the 1950s, casinos flourished.

Today, the city still maintains its status as a popular tourist destination and the gambling capital of the world.

History of Gambling in Las Vegas

Gambling has long been a part of the history of Las Vegas. The local Mojave Indians were known to gamble on dice and card games. Native American tribes that were later forced to relocate to what is now Las Vegas—the Paiute, the Chemehuevi, and the Navajo—also used gambling as a form of entertainment. But gambling took off in the city after a businessman named Bill Graham opened the city’s first casino in 1941.

He called the casino the Town House Hotel and Casino. Within five years, Graham had accumulated enough money to build a new hotel. Later that same year, he opened the Sands Hotel and Casino. By the 1960s, the city’s gaming industry had grown enough that a group of investors bought an aeroplane and flew it across the city with enough money to open a new casino every day for an entire year.

Today, there are more than 40 hotels and casinos in Las Vegas that attract tourists from around the world for their chance to indulge in some of the most entertaining experiences on Earth.
